Project Snapshot

What Senderos Apaztli Does

Senderos Apaztli began because local riders needed a place to practice mountain biking in their own community.

Before the project started, riders from Magdalena Apazco had to travel to other areas to ride more technical routes. That added time, distance, and risk before training could begin.

Luis Manuel Santiago Olivera and a small group of friends started building their own trails. Luis would ride up the mountain with tools in his backpack, including a shovel, pick, and machete.

The first trail the group cleaned started near Camino Ancho de Talán. The terrain was steep and technical. The riders jokingly called it “La Desarma Fierros” because bikes rattled hard on the trail.

Why the Name Matters

The name Apaztli comes from Nahuatl. It means large clay basin. It also connects to Apazco, the town’s original name.

For Senderos Apaztli, the name keeps the project rooted in place. The trails, rides, and youth classes all connect back to Magdalena Apazco.

Why This Project Matters

Mountain biking needs more than a bike. Riders need safe trails, basic tools, protective gear, maintenance supplies, and people willing to do the work.

In Magdalena Apazco, volunteers build and maintain the trails themselves. The terrain is hard and rocky. A shovel alone is not enough. The mountain also has little shade, so volunteer work can become difficult early in the day.

Senderos Apaztli gives local riders a place to train closer to home. It also gives young people a healthy activity that teaches discipline, bike handling, trail care, and respect for nature.

Youth Cycling and Community Rides

Luis is a graduate of the sports training program at the public university in Oaxaca, known as UABJO. He has started an introductory mountain biking program for about 10 girls and boys in the community.

The classes teach basic bike handling, trail skills, discipline, and care for the natural space around the trails.

Senderos Apaztli also organizes community rides every two weeks. These rides welcome different skill levels and invite people to visit Magdalena Apazco, meet local riders, and see the trails built by volunteers.

RIDE APAZTLI 2025

On July 20, 2025, Senderos Apaztli MTB organized RIDE APAZTLI in Magdalena Apazco. The event started at the Palacio Municipal at 7:30 AM and brought riders together for a free community ride.

The ride included dirt trails and a renovated jump line built by local riders.

Oax Sport supported the event by donating 10 custom jerseys to Senderos Apaztli organizers, members, and volunteers.

What Oax Sport Funded
