Alejandra Paulina Ortiz Hernández, from Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca, traveled to California to compete at the Pomona-Pitzer Track & Field Invite on April 11, 2026.
She runs the 100m and 200m. Her World Athletics profile lists personal bests of 11.38 in the 100m and 23.55 in the 200m. It also lists her as a NACAC U23 bronze medallist in the 4×100 relay and a 2-time national champion. She represented Mexico in the 100m at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
Alejandra is also studying for a Master’s in Corporate Law at UANL, the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León.
We created this campaign to help cover one clear cost. Her flight.
The campaign raised $285 USD from 4 supporters against a goal of $250 USD. It finished at 113% of goal.

What this campaign covered
What we funded:
- Flight support tied to this trip

What we did not fund:
- Salaries

What donors made possible on this trip
Alejandra shared her reflections in a written response after the meet.
She felt excited and motivated when she learned she would go to California.
This chance meant a lot to her. She does not always get the opportunity to compete in the United States.
At the meet, she entered the 100m and 200m.
This competition gave her a chance to learn. She had an injury earlier this season and needed to test herself.
She said the sports culture in the United States feels very different from competing in Mexico.
She said Pomona-Pitzer taught her to trust herself. She meant that some competitors look intimidating, but she learned to trust her own preparation.
She added that the training her coaches give her prepares her for everything.
Alejandra’s words
Her message to donors:
Thank you so much for your support. Getting support to follow your dreams is not easy, and in Mexico there is an enormous obstacle: support for athletes.
She added that knowing people were supporting her made her feel committed and responsible to do things well.
When we asked what this trip meant to her:
It meant confidence and learning.
What comes next
Alejandra said her next goal this season is to run a strong mark and place herself among the top athletes in the national ranking.
After returning from California, Alejandra won gold in the 100m and the 4×100 relay at the ANUIES 2026 National University Championships in Toluca. She is now a 5-time national university champion.
She also wants to improve her start and handle her nerves better when competing against athletes from other countries.
