About El Árbol del Tule

El Árbol del Tule is a Montezuma cypress in Santa María del Tule, about 9 km east of Oaxaca City. It has the widest trunk of any tree in the world, measuring over 14 meters in diameter. Researchers estimate the tree is between 1,400 and 1,600 years old.

The tree stands in the churchyard of Santa María del Tule. Visitors can walk around it and see its size up close. The town is a common stop for travelers heading to Mitla or the Sierra Norte.
