Program

What the program does

In bi-monthly workshops led by certified local trainers, young people aged 13 to 18 learn situational awareness, boundary setting and practical techniques.

The program prioritises girls, Indigenous youth and participants from high-risk areas, and connects them with supportive mentors and safe spaces for continued practice.

Why it matters

Many young people in southern Mexico lack safe recreation and trusted guidance, and girls in particular face higher risks of harassment. Teaching practical self-defense and non-violent communication helps youth protect themselves and others.

What the program covers

  • Self-defense workshops: stance, strikes, escapes and situational awareness
  • Violence and harassment prevention: boundaries, bystander strategies and local support networks
  • Community leadership: selected participants trained as peer educators and youth safety ambassadors
  • Emotional wellbeing: group reflection and coping strategies
  • Safe spaces and mentorship: partnerships with community centres for mats, gear and trained mentors

Goals to 2026

  • Train 180 or more young people across six communities
  • Reduce reported bullying and harassment among participants
  • Certify 10 youth ambassadors as peer trainers
  • Host an annual Peace Through Strength event
