Program

What the program does

In underserved communities of Oaxaca, cultural expectations and financial barriers often keep girls from organised sport. This program removes those barriers with targeted support that helps girls start, and stay, in athletics.

It builds confidence, leadership and academic persistence alongside the training itself.

Why it matters

Many girls in southern Mexico face limited mobility, early caregiving responsibilities, safety concerns and a lack of female coaches or role models. Funding mentorship, safe spaces and competition access helps them stay in school and become role models in their own communities.

What the program covers

  • Mentorship and role models: pairing girls with women athletes, coaches and community leaders
  • Competition access: travel, meals and official entry for track, road and trail events
  • Gear and safe training: quality shoes and uniforms, training environments with adult supervision
  • Community workshops: sessions with families and schools supporting girls’ goals

Goals to 2028

  • Increase female participation at state and national races
  • Reduce dropout linked to gender roles and safety concerns
  • Develop a pipeline of future female coaches, mentors and community leaders
