This blog series
Every Thursday, I host “Jueves de Oax Sport” on Tribu al Extremo. Here, I turn each episode into text so you can read fast, save the key facts, and quote with precision. In every post you will find: episode details, the week’s support, and the interview organized by theme.
Episode details
- Host and text: Juan Zurita Victoria
- Guest athlete: Jasmín Carolina Cruz (Espíritu Guerrero)
- Mom and guardian: Alicia Carolina Ortiz Garzón
- Coach: Prof. Octaviano Robles
- Focus: track and youth development (speed and preparation)
Support of the week
In January 2026, we delivered a pair of training shoes to Jasmín during a track practice, with her coach present. We needed to act fast because she had upcoming competitions and her shoes wear out quickly while she is still growing.
Program: Step Forward
What we supported: training shoes
Support report: https://oaxsport.org/step-forward-sprinter-oaxaca/
Results and times
- Festival de Atletismo El Espinal: 300 m and 150 m (Jasmín raced both events).
- Parque Primavera: 300 m in 44.40. 150 m in 19.60.
- Cross country (León): 1500 m in 5:00 (Jasmín reported it as “5 minutes”).
- Estatal de Atletismo de Oaxaca 2026 (CONADE): U14. 1st place in the 300 m with 44.54. 1st place in the 150 m with 19.94. In both events, they reported a faster time than the U16 mark.

30-second recap
- Jasmín explained how shoes wear out fast during a growth stage, and why a new pair changes everyday training.
- We talked about the real costs of competing. Transportation, lodging, food, entry fees, and gear.
- Alicia explained that families cover almost everything, and the team carries equipment because they have no place to store it.
- I explained how we run fundraising campaigns, and how a club can organize better to compete and reduce costs.
- I proposed preparing a campaign to support the club with starting blocks and basic equipment.
Interview (text)
Theme 1. The support and why it matters
Q (Juan): What did you think about the support?
A (Jasmín): “I really liked the shoes. Thank you very much.”
Q (Juan): Why do the shoes help you right now?
A (Jasmín): “They help a lot because I am still growing and shoes stop fitting me very quickly.”
Theme 2. Recent races and times
Q (Juan): What were your most recent competitions, and what did you race?
A (Jasmín): Espinal and Parque Primavera. I raced the 300 and the 150.
Q (Juan): What changed at Parque Primavera?
A (Jasmín): “There was not as much wind. I improved my times a lot. I ran 44.40 in the 300 and 19.60 in the 150.”
Theme 3. Traveling to compete costs money. What athletes need
Q (Juan): When you traveled to León, did you receive any support?
A (Jasmín): “They helped us with transportation. Sometimes it is a lot of money.”
Q (Juan): In Espinal, how did you organize the trip?
A (Jasmín): “Each of us paid with our own resources because we did not get support.”
Q (Juan): What kind of support would you like for your team?
A (Jasmín): Transportation and, if possible, lodging.
Theme 4. Team organization and performance
Q (Juan): Do you think disorganization affects you?
A (Jasmín): “Yes, because sometimes we need to warm up and they are not there.”
Theme 5. Equipment and services that make a difference
Q (Juan): What equipment do you use for training?
A (Jasmín): Plyometric equipment and starting blocks.
Q (Juan): What did you notice in other states?
A (Jasmín): “Some girls had more suitable training equipment, and we did not.”
Q (Juan): Beyond training, what does an athlete need?
A (Jasmín): A nutritionist and a physical therapist.
Theme 6. What Alicia (mom and guardian) said
Q (Juan): How do you see support for youth sports in Oaxaca?
A (Alicia): “Here in Oaxaca there is no support. Parents have to cover everything.”
Q (Juan): What does the team need most?
A (Alicia): Starting blocks, training equipment, and a place to store it. Shoes and spikes wear out, and kids outgrow them fast.
Q (Juan): What differences do you see compared to other states?
A (Alicia): Uniforms, tools, and training quality. She also sees strong discipline in the kids, but not enough support.
Q (Juan): How do you reduce costs when traveling?
A (Alicia): Families coordinate, share a car when possible, or each person buys a bus ticket and splits expenses.
Q (Juan): What has been key to Jasmín’s performance?
A (Alicia): Discipline, nutrition, a nutritionist, and a physical therapist. That helps prevent injuries and maintain strong times.
What is next
At Oax Sport, we will work with the club to define clear needs and build a focused campaign. We want to prioritize starting blocks and basic equipment. We also want to improve travel logistics so costs go further and the team arrives together and on time.
