Safe & Strong – Community Self-Defense for Youth in Oaxaca, Mexico
Empowering youth with practical self‑defense, conflict resolution, and leadership skills. This program prioritizes girls and Indigenous youth and aligns with UN SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), SDG 3 (Good Health), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Overview
This project equips vulnerable youth in Oaxaca, Mexico with essential self‑defense skills, conflict de‑escalation, and pathways to community leadership. In neighborhoods affected by violence, poverty, and gender inequality, safety training becomes a foundation for confidence and civic participation.
Through bi‑monthly workshops led by certified local trainers, youth ages 13–18 learn situational awareness, boundary setting, and practical techniques. The program prioritizes girls, Indigenous youth, and participants from high‑risk areas, and connects them with supportive mentors and safe spaces for continued practice.
Why This Project Matters
Many young people in southern Mexico lack safe recreation and trusted guidance. Girls, in particular, face higher risks of harassment and gender‑based violence. By teaching practical self‑defense and non‑violent communication, we help youth protect themselves and others—building dignity, resilience, and safer communities.
