Mexico City, July 13, 2025 — Emily Barrera, a 23-year-old athlete from Oaxaca de Juárez, made history by winning her debut amateur mixed martial arts (MMA) fight at the national tournament Campeón de Campeones 7, held at the Terrible Morales Gymnasium in the State of Mexico. Her victory is not only a personal milestone but a testament to the power of community and international support in helping athletes from underserved regions achieve their goals.
A Hard-Fought Win in the Octagon

Emily faced a highly experienced opponent from Mexico City, a fighter with several MMA and boxing bouts under her belt. Despite the nerves and the challenge ahead, Emily remained composed and tactical, ultimately securing victory by decision.
“Before the fight, I was nervous, especially because I knew my opponent had more experience,” Emily said. “But once the match began, I felt free and focused. Winning this fight meant everything to me—especially because a year ago, I didn’t believe I could ever do this.”
Her performance demonstrated discipline, heart, and grit—qualities that define her rising path in the world of MMA.
Community Support That Made It Possible
Emily’s trip and participation were made possible through a grassroots campaign led by Oax Sport Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports athletes from small communities in Oaxaca. The campaign raised 5,800 MXN (about $340 USD), which covered essential expenses like registration fees, travel, food, and accommodation.
A major contribution came from Emma and Guillaume, donors based in France, who gave $200 USD (approx. 3,750 MXN), covering the majority of costs. Emma’s professional profile can be found on LinkedIn.
Oax Sport also worked with media allies and volunteers to amplify the campaign. Journalist Jorge Oropeza and the team at Sobre la Mesa published a full feature (read here), while William Christopher contributed professional video production. Emily’s success was further highlighted by Agenda Mediática (see article).
Behind the scenes, campaign logistics were coordinated by Juan Victoria, Chair of the Athlete Support Committee at Oax Sport.
From Fear to Focus
Emily traveled to the State of Mexico with her teammates and stayed in a shared Airbnb. The fight venue was a spacious gymnasium inside a major sports complex, equipped with a full basketball court and bleachers. Unbeknownst to her, Emily’s coach had entered her in the advanced category—trusting in her readiness.
“I was scared at first—afraid that I’d be taken down or that the fight might be stopped early,” she said. “But once I was inside, the adrenaline kicked in. I didn’t feel the punches or kicks until one gave me a bump on my head!”
A year ago, Emily had confided in her sports psychologist about her fear of ever competing in MMA. With ongoing support, therapy, and rigorous training, she overcame those fears. Her debut marks a major step forward not only in her athletic growth but in her personal confidence as well.
“He told me I was ready—and he was right. I didn’t even know I had been entered in the toughest category,” she added with a smile.
A Look Ahead
Emily’s performance earned the attention of Liga Vendetta, one of Mexico’s respected MMA circuits. She has been invited to compete again in November 2025.
Sincere Gratitude
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who helped—those who donated, shared my posts, interviewed me, or helped with therapy and recovery. Emma’s donation made it possible for me to travel and compete with dignity. I’ll never forget that.”
Oax Sport also publicly acknowledges Lic. Arturo de Jesús Chávez Ramírez, Director General of the Instituto del Deporte de Oaxaca (INDEPORTE), for fostering visibility and infrastructure for emerging athletes in the region.
Emily’s debut win is more than just a result—it’s a message. When a community, near or far, believes in its athletes, barriers are broken, and futures are built.
