With an Impressive Second Place in the 24 Hour World Championship in France, The Oaxacan Distance Runner Is Aiming to Be the Last Man Standing in The Unique and Exciting Backyard Ultra

Oax Sport is pleased to announce sponsoring Octaviano Robles in the 2021 edition of the Backyard Mexico, which will allow him to qualify for the Backyard Ultra Final in Tennessee, United States.

The competition will occur on the 20th of March 2021 in Bosques de Monterreal, Arteaga, Coahuila. The Backyard México is an endurance trail race, where participants run a 6.70 km circuit that they must complete in a maximum of one hour. Otherwise, they are disqualified. All competitors meet at the starting line for a new start and run the course each hour. The competition will continue every hour until only one athlete is running who will be the winner.

Oax Sport is a sports agency based in Texas and Oaxaca that supports Oaxaca’s local athletes. They provide sponsorship and racing opportunities. Oax Sport saw the need to offer the Backyard Trail experience to one of the most accomplished ultra-distance runners in Oaxaca. With the participation of Octaviano in this race, he will live a new adventure in this unique competition and gets a chance to qualify for the world championship final in Tennessee, USA.

Octaviano Robles Cruz, Ultra Distance Runner and Member of the Auxiliary, Banking, Industrial and Commercial Police (PABIC) of Oaxaca, brings more than 20 years of experience in ultramarathon running, which includes many national races in the range of 100km and 100mile. His latest significant participation consists of the IAU 24 Hour World Championship in France and the Ultramaratón 24 Horas “Non-Stop” in Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo.

“The Backyard is an unusual competition because it does not have a specific finish. Speed is irrelevant since it is a 100% endurance and tactics race with tremendous physical and psychological demand. In Octaviano, we identify the qualities that allow him to face these demands. We believe that he will have an outstanding performance and will once again put Oaxaca’s name on the podium.” Eddi Melesio Pérez Silva, Athletic Director, Oax Sport.

The Backyard is the brainchild of Lazarus Lake, the race director of Barkley Marathons. Backyard Ultra is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors must consecutively run the distance of 6706 meters (4.167 miles) in less than one hour. These distance loops are repeated hourly. The race ends when the last runner either concede or fail to finish the distance within the allotted time frame. The Backyard Ultra has no finishing time since the winner is the last one standing. The 2020 Mexican edition had Raramuri athletes running for 64 hours to complete a distance of 430 km, putting the Tarahumara at the 5th position worldwide.

“I am delighted to accept the invitation from Oax Sport offering me sponsorship to represent Oaxaca in a competition that is physically demanding but more emotionally, as Backyard Mexico. I have always liked challenges and knowing how far I can push my emotional limits. I want to participate in this demanding test to overcome my feelings even more in the ultra-distance.” Octaviano Robles Cruz, Ultra Distance Runner and Member of the Auxiliary, Banking, Industrial and Commercial Police (PABIC) of Oaxaca.
